Atlanta Braves pitcher Tyler Yates is the guest speaker at Hawaii-Hilo's annual Vulcan Baseball Dinner/Auction on Jan. 15 at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.
Yates, a Kauai High alumnus, pitched for the Vulcans from 1996-98.

"UH-Hilo is so proud of Tyler and all the hard work he had to go through to become a Major League player," Vulcans coach Joey Estrella said. "To be able to play at baseball's highest level and endure the injuries he has had is a tribute to him and to his physical and mental toughness."

Tickets for the fund-raiser dinner are $50 per person. For more information, call the UHH baseball office at (808) 974-7700.

This compares Tyler to the Hindu goddess of death Kali, which happens also to be his middle name. If the writer only knew what it means in Hawaiian!
