Yates to speak at Vulcans' annual dinner

http://starbulletin.com/2006/12/08/sports/hawaiibeat.html

Atlanta Braves pitcher Tyler Yates is the guest speaker at Hawaii-Hilo's annual Vulcan Baseball Dinner/Auction on Jan. 15 at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.
Yates, a Kauai High alumnus, pitched for the Vulcans from 1996-98.

"UH-Hilo is so proud of Tyler and all the hard work he had to go through to become a Major League player," Vulcans coach Joey Estrella said. "To be able to play at baseball's highest level and endure the injuries he has had is a tribute to him and to his physical and mental toughness."

Tickets for the fund-raiser dinner are $50 per person. For more information, call the UHH baseball office at (808) 974-7700.

This compares Tyler to the Hindu goddess of death Kali, which happens also to be his middle name. If the writer only knew what it means in Hawaiian!

In Brief

Former UH-Hilo athletic director (1990-2000) Bill Trumbo has resigned as AD of California State University-Monterey Bay after six years. This article is about the man succeeding him.

The current Hawaii Island Journal (1-15 April 2005) has an article on KonaBaseball.com. I wonder if any former Vulcans are in this nascent league.

I'm back. I never really left and Vulcanology--a full-fledged, interactive website--has always been on my mind. Since my last post I've kept in touch with a few former players. Other things have kept me busy but I'll try to maintain this blog regularly until I set up that site, almost certainly to be the only one devoted to the history of the UH-Hilo sports program.

I talked to former Vulcan tennis player Britta Kehrhahn yesterday. She's interested in contributing to the future Vulcanology website. The ideal website would be something like allmusic.com in setup if not subject matter. Yesterday's Hawaii Tribune-Herald had a where-are-they-now feature on David LaQua, an ex-Vulcan basketball player now in Australia. Always good to know what's going on, but Vulcanology will provide continuous coverage of the program--past, present, and future.
